Shark liver oil has long been utilized by Scandinavian populations for its numerous health benefits. Historically, it was used in traditional medicine to assist with digestive problems, respiratory diseases, and to accelerate wound healing. Today, it is available worldwide as a dietary supplement primarily used for its high content of alkylglycerols. These compounds are found in highest concentrations in shark liver oil and are difficult to replenish naturally. Their ideal composition strengthens the immune system and achieves a remarkable immunomodulatory effect.
Alkylglycerols (ether lipids) are naturally present in breast milk, bone marrow, and in our liver. Although small amounts are produced in our body throughout life, it is noteworthy that their levels drastically decrease with age. It is extremely challenging to replenish them naturally as they are almost absent in plant oils and other foods we consume daily. However, they are predominant in shark liver. Alkylglycerols are notable for their strong antioxidant, immunostimulatory, and immunomodulatory effects. They are an essential part of our defense system – enhancing immunity, preventing disease, and increasing the body’s resistance. Although many people are unaware, they are also involved in the process of antibody and leukocyte (white blood cell) formation and maturation. Numerous scientific studies have confirmed their efficacy in treating malignant diseases.
In the early 1950s, Swedish doctor Astrid Brohult was among the first to recognize the therapeutic effects of alkylglycerols. Specifically, she observed that children with leukemia who were treated with calf bone marrow showed better recovery from radiation and their bodies replenished white blood cells more rapidly. Scientists soon realized that the substance responsible was one that naturally occurs in bone marrow, namely alkylglycerol compounds. Further research established that shark liver oil contains the highest concentrations of these compounds. In 1954, purified oil was produced, and since then, it has become exceptionally popular for strengthening the immune system, as well as for disease treatment and prevention. Subsequent research has confirmed its effects, which the inhabitants of northern countries have long been well acquainted with.
In recent decades, research on shark liver oil has expanded to Denmark, Belgium, Norway, and the USA, and studies have even been conducted at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, which, among other things, awards the Nobel Prize in Medicine. This underscores the significance of these findings.
What scientists have discovered has broadened the use of shark liver oil worldwide. So, what makes shark liver so special? Before the research, scientists wondered why inhabitants of northern European countries seemed to suffer less from serious illnesses. What sets them apart from the rest of the world? During their investigations, they discovered that these people almost daily used shark liver oil. They observed that it helped in strengthening the immune system and preventing malignant diseases. But what is the secret? Over time, scientists realized that sharks almost never develop tumors, which intrigued them to delve deeper into research to uncover why this is the case.
They began by studying the anatomy of the shark. Their fascinating physical structure serves a specific purpose, with their liver playing a central role. In contrast to their bulky bodies, sharks have relatively small fins. To compensate for this and to move freely in their natural habitat, nature has gifted them with large livers, which account for almost 20% of their body mass. Because their livers are rich in oils and other compounds, they facilitate their smooth movement in the water.
It was later discovered that the liver of sharks contains important compounds—alkylglycerols—which turned out to be highly beneficial for people.
Shark liver oil is recommended for everyone! Almost no one is exempt from encountering stressful situations from time to time. You can use it if you frequently experience periods of increased psychological and physical stress, during times of weakened immunity, or after recovering from illness. It’s also an excellent preventative measure to maintain overall health. During the autumn and winter periods, or during times of increased incidence of colds and infections, respiratory diseases are also more common. At such times, opt for the ideal dose of alkylglycerols to prevent illness or speed up recovery. Shark liver oil also helps those struggling with bronchitis, asthma, and allergies, as well as those undergoing radiation or chemotherapy. As we age, our body’s resistance weakens, so shark liver oil is especially recommended for older individuals with weakened immune systems.
If you engage in intense workouts or are actively involved in sports, your body is under significant stress, and the best way to replenish lost energy is with pure alkylglycerol compounds.
When selecting a dietary supplement, it is important to be cautious. Opt for a clinically proven product that contains only purified alkylglycerol compounds similar to those found in breast milk.
Pay attention to the technological processes involved in production, which should eliminate unsaturated fatty acids, heavy metals, and cholesterols. This results in the purest and highest quality form that can meet your body’s needs and provide the best effect. If you have issues with elevated blood fats, it’s crucial to ensure that unsaturated fatty acids are excluded from the product, as their presence could increase bad cholesterol levels. In case of sensitivity to any ingredient, check whether the capsules contain wheat, soy, dairy, or corn preservatives, as well as yeast-based preservatives.
A product free from these allergens is widely available to everyone, including those who are sensitive to milk and dairy products, soy, or yeast. It’s also important that the supplement does not include compounds like squalene or vitamins A and D, as their long-term use could lead to an excess in the body, which might cause undesirable effects. Excessive amounts can be stored in the liver, potentially leading to intoxication and hypervitaminosis, and even reducing the effectiveness of shark liver oil and alkylglycerols. Additionally, squalene is undesirable in the treatment of malignant diseases as it can contribute to the formation of capillaries that feed tumors.
Shark liver oil is most commonly used in capsule form. If you choose purified oil, which is free from squalene, vitamins A, and D, you can use it year-round. Opt for standardized oil that contains 20% alkylglycerols, as these powerful compounds are crucial for positive effects and immune system strengthening.
Strengthening the immune system is important at all stages of life as it helps prevent illness and maintain health. In today’s fast-paced world, where stress is frequent, the immune system can drastically decline, making the body more susceptible to viruses and bacteria. While external factors affect health, the most critical influences are internal—what we consume through food or dietary supplements. Additionally, overall lifestyle factors such as regular exercise, sufficient sleep, adequate water intake, and a generally balanced way of living impact immunity. Given the difficulty in meeting all these factors, preventive use of natural dietary supplements to boost immunity is recommended. Shark liver oil is an ideal supplement to stimulate the immune system and help prevent illness.
